How to wash your gear

Washing your ski gear may seem like a scary thought, and sure, there are ways you can ruin your jacket or pants with a washing machine! But, luckily, washing your garments safely and effectively is pretty simple. We’ve put together this handy guide for you to follow to ensure your favourite jacket and pants will come out looking like new, with the stains removed, the sweat washed out, and the DWR restored to its former glory. Let’s not waste time, then, because if you're here, it means your jacket needs a wash!

Step-by-step guide

Step 1 - Double-check your detergent

Using ‘Tech Wash’ or a specialist laundry detergent specifically designed for waterproof outerwear is great, but not necessary. We test all of our gear with regular laundry detergent and can guarantee that it’s both safe and effective for use with our snow gear. However, detergents that contain bleaches or fabric softeners will damage the waterproof membrane and DWR treatment, so double-check the label before using!

Step 2 - Separate your snow gear from regular laundry

Separate your snow gear from your regular laundry and wash one item at a time for best results.

Step 3 - Check your pockets

Remove everything from the pockets of the item you’re washing.

Step 4 - Turn garments inside out

Close all pockets, buttons, snappers, velcro, and zips, then turn your garments inside out for the best results.

Step 5 - Set the machine

Place your garment inside your machine, add your detergent, and set to a short cycle, outerwear cycle, or delicates cycle with a temperature at 40 degrees Celsius/100 degrees Fahrenheit, or lower. This information is also on your laundry label inside your garment.

Step 6 - Drip-dry outside or over the sink

Run the cycle, and after it’s done, allow your item to drip-dry somewhere it won’t make a mess (over a sink, bucket, or outside if the weather’s okay!). But keep it out of direct sunlight if possible.

Step 7 - Tumble dry once drip free to restore the DWR

Once your item is dry, keep the garment inside out, and throw it in the tumble dryer on a low heat for 15-20 minutes to re-activate and refresh the DWR coating on the outside of the garment. This will improve the garment’s performance on your next trip, so you should definitely do it. Don’t worry, it will be fine, trust us!

A note from us

We do extensive wash-testing on all our products, so we know that they can stand up to a little spin cycle and a tumble dry. And while we know that throwing your precious skiwear in a washing machine or tumble dryer is scary, it’s completely safe providing you follow our guide above, don’t use bleaching the wrong detergent or fabric softener, don’t wash above 40 degrees Celcius, and tumble dry on a medium heat. Do that, and you’ll be able to extend the life of your ski gear for as long as you look after it!

Thank you so much for choosing Dope and Montec, and for taking such good care of your gear. The longer you own, wear, and ride your gear, the more sustainable it becomes. But, of course, if you have any questions or queries before you throw your jacket and pants in the wash, reach out to us and we’ll be more than happy to offer more information and assistance in whatever way we can.

Happy trails!
